This is an application for foreign nationals who, due to reasons such as renouncing Japanese nationality or being born in Japan, intend to reside in Japan for more than 60 days without undergoing entry procedures. This application is made to obtain a residence status, starting from the day when the relevant reason occurred.

Overview of Permission to Acquire Residence Status
- Individuals who have renounced or lost Japanese nationality
- Individuals who, after retiring from military service while residing in places like U.S. military bases in Japan under the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement, wish to continue living in Japan
If the application is made within 60 days from the day when the reason occurred, individuals can continue to reside in Japan without obtaining a residence status. However, there may be cases where individuals wish to continue their life in Japan.
The necessary procedure for such cases is the “Application for Permission to Acquire Residence Status.”
The application for permission to acquire residence status must be made within 30 days.
The “Application for Permission to Acquire Residence Status” must be submitted to the immigration office with jurisdiction over the place of residence within 30 days from the day when events such as birth or renunciation of Japanese nationality occurred.
